Brennan (Will Ferrell) and Dale (John C. Reilly) are two adults that act like children and still live at home. Brennan lives with his mom, Nancy, and Dale lives with his dad, Robert. Robert and Nancy fall in love and end up getting married. This in turn makes Brennan and Dale Step Brothers.
Brennan and Dale automatically don't get along well. Dale tells Brennan the most important rule of the house is, don't touch his drum kit EVER. Despite Dales warning, Brennan does the most logical thing and plays the drums while Dale isn't around. Dale comes back and inspects his drum kit for any sign of Brennan playing it. He runs downstairs and confronts Brennan about his drum kit. Obviously Brennan denies Dales questioning but Dale doesn't buy it. Dale bursts out in anger and they end up having a gruesome fight. Nancy and Robert come home and breaks up the fight and grounds them for a week with no television and need to find jobs in a month or they will be kicked out.
In my opinion, the drum kit scene is definitely one of the funniest scenes in the movie. Just how iconic the dialog is during the whole scene makes it hilarious. The drum kit scenes dialog grew in popularity by Tik Tok using this sound. The scene in its entirety is just comedic gold. Later that night, both Brennan and Dale sleep walk. They go around the kitchen and throw random things and eat lots of food. Brennan puts Nancy's purse in the freezer and Dale puts the couch pillows in the oven.
Derek, Brennans younger and more successful brother, comes to visit and have dinner. Derek starts to make fun of both Brennan and Dale because they don't have jobs or lives. Dale then punches Derek because he wouldn't stop and he egged him on. This causes Dereks wife to want to have an affair with Dale because no one has ever stood up to Derek like that. Later that night, Brennan and Dale find out they have a lot in common and become best friends.
Brennan and Dale go to the interviews Robert scheduled for them. They perform poorly on all of them. Robert and Nancy tell Brennan and Dale they need to find new living arrangements and attend therapy. They also tell Brennan and Dale that they will be selling the house and sailing around the world on Roberts boat. Brennan and Dale decide to make an entertainment company, "Prestige Worldwide" and made a music video for their song "Boats n H*es." The music video takes a turn for the worst showing Brennan and Dale destroying Roberts boat. Robert is furious, and on Christmas day announces him and Nancy are getting a divorce. Brennan and Dale think it's all their fault, which it is, but Nancy reassures them it's not. Robert screams at them saying that it's totally their fault.
Both Brennan and Dale went their separate ways, Brennan working for Dereks helicopter firm and Dale working for a catering company. Wanting to reunite the family, Brennan volunteers to oversee a prestigious event, the Catalina Wine Mixer, for Derek's company and invites Robert and Nancy. They hire the catering company that employs Dale.
I don't want to spoil the ending because I have done that the past few blogs. All in all I think that Step Brothers is a really funny movie. Even though its comedy comes from the pure stupidity of Brennan and Dale, it still makes it a great movie. I give Step Brothers a 7/10 just because I think it's really funny.
